Bringing the social to social justice: a website for Multiplicity of Pursuits

Key Takeaways:

Card games are a tried and true way to bring people together. Who hasn’t fought over a game of Old Maid with their family during the holidays? Imagine a game like Apples to Apples but where people of all ages can be inspired to enact the social change they want to see in the world. That’s Multiplicity of Pursuits, an engaging card game created by the Service Academy Resource Lab. Part of the St. George’s School, the lab is a collection of initiatives lowering barriers for young people to partake in service that benefits the community.

Having created the website for the Service Academy Resource Lab, the team at e9digital was a natural fit for this card game project. We offer clients a peek into our services by showing them similar work we’ve done through press releases and case studies like these:  ASL Consulting and Reservoir Media

Few things are more frustrating than buying a new game and being unable to make heads or tails out of the instructions. Multiplicity of Pursuits wanted players to understand the game pre-download, so our designer was tasked with creating a straightforward WordPress website that would showcase the cards, make understanding to play it as easy as pie, and tell people where to get it so they can start moving and shaking for change in their community. However, it needed to capture the attention of people young and old interested in card games, social justice, or both, so the design had to be enticing and easy to navigate.

“I was inspired by my own experience playing card games and other card websites. It was important that the user immediately understood the game, making them eager to download a copy.” – Jordan Harriger, Associate Creative Director | e9digital

Our designer brought inspiration from his personal experiences to design the interactive hero image. The hero image mimics this gameplay, matching how the game will look when you have all the cards in your hand, giving website visitors a sneak peek of what to expect. When a visitor hovers over one of the five cards, it pops out so it can be read easily.

When playing the game, the black card is a fill-in-the-blank every person sees. The red cards make up everyone’s hand. The website colors are black, white, and red, matching the cards for seamless branding. Plus, these colors help relate the game to one the players may already be familiar with, including Uno or anything with a standard deck of cards.

With such a unique product, the homepage does differ from the standard content we’d include. You can expect a few best practices on any e9digital site, such as a clear top menu on every page, a logo on the left, and a CTA (call-to-action) button on the right.

However, the rest of the homepage looks a little different, with:

  • An about the game section that invites people to learn how to play the game.
  • A get the game section that details how you can win the game or download a free version.
  • A behind the game section that invites visitors to learn more about the Service Academy Resource Lab.
